Cosy Season Is Here: How to Warm Up Your Home This Adelaide Winter

There's a particular kind of joy in an Adelaide winter - the early dark, the rain on the window, and the very good excuse to stay in. At HM Gallerie, winter is our favourite season to potter about the house: slow Sunday cooking, a candle lit by four o'clock, a throw over the couch, and nowhere to be. If you're ready to lean into the cosy, here's how we'd do it - with a few of our most-loved pieces to help you along.

Comfort cooking starts with the right pot

Nothing says winter like something bubbling away on the stove for hours. A good cast iron casserole is the hero of the season - it goes from stovetop to oven to table, holds heat beautifully, and turns the cheapest cut of meat into something tender and brilliant. Our Maxwell & Williams cast iron round casserole in English Racing Green is the kind of pot you'll reach for every weekend and hand down one day. Fill it with a slow-braised lamb shoulder, a rich ragu, or a Sunday roast veg and let the house fill with that smell.

If you'd rather move quickly on a weeknight, a dependable non-stick pan earns its keep all winter. The Anolon Endurance+ range and BergHOFF Balance pans are the workhorses we recommend again and again - hard-wearing, easy to clean, and just as happy searing a steak as softening onions for soup.

Soup season, sorted

When it's grey outside, soup is the answer. A big batch on Sunday means lunch sorted for half the week, and there's something deeply satisfying about a pot of minestrone or a velvety pumpkin soup made from scratch. A roomy chef pan - like the Scanpan STS 32cm - gives you space to build flavour properly, and the right tools (a sturdy peeler, a good garlic press) make the prep feel less like a chore and more like the nice part of the evening.

Make it cosy - and look after yourself

Cooking warms the body; the rest of the house should warm the soul. This is the season for layering - a generous throw across the couch, a couple of extra cushions, and lamps instead of overhead lights once the sun goes down. A candle or a reed diffuser does the rest: our Peppermint Grove Lemongrass & Lime diffuser brings a fresh, uplifting note that cuts through the closed-up-house feeling of winter.

Don't forget yourself, either. Cold air and warm heaters are tough on skin, so a good hand cream by every sink is a tiny luxury that makes a real difference - we're partial to the Al.ive Body range, made in Australia with shea butter and sweet almond oil. And there's no better way to read three chapters of a book than with a hot drink that stays hot, like the Frank Green ceramic coffee cup.
